Hermeneutics also are called enigma codes and they are the things in the text that create mystery or suspense or anything that asks the audience a question.
In film or TV the scenes that never really have an answer or has not continued a plot line are called cold opens.
PRIORETIC CODE
anything in a scene that suggests an action.
SYMBOLIC CODE
anything that suggests a deeper meaning. E.g. red means love or anger.

breaking apart the media product and seeing how its formed and  how the things in this text reflect on the audience.

  • The mis en scene a generic city that is supposed to look like New York
  • The colours are so basic apart from her face which has blue and pink on it.
  • Her presence is highlighted through the use of high key lighting which emphasises all her features.

  • Her lip gloss is a natural colour that is soft and this shows a feminine aspect.
  • The models slightly open mouth and lip gloss is a Prioretic code
  • This ad is posing the question that are women actually pretty if they do not wear makeup
  • She wouldn't actually be putting on mascara in the middle of the street
  • Her skin is edited to hide every blemish and her eyes are also photo shopped to be ridiculously white.
  1. z line- the line that directs where you look
  2. serif font- flicky bits on the font
  3. sans serif font- no flicky bits on the font
  4. rule of thirds- more atheistically pleasing when image is split into thirds
  5. lexis-The choice of language. very very specific to the audience, can be formal and informal.
  6. mode of address- is it the way the media talks to its target audience.
  7. rule of three- show that 3 colours is the best way to advertise something as it doesn't over complicate the audience's eyes.
This advert looks like the American proper gander ads that were out in WW2. The woman that is drawn is a typical 1950's woman that would be the target audience for this advert but realistically this appeals to the male gaze theory that say s that all adverts are actually to appeal men.
