MUSIC VIDEO
approx 90 mins long
They have so many beats per minute
Can have a series of different images or a story but it doesn't have to be consistent
Tend to not have natural audio like films do
FILMS
approx 4 mins long
films have a story line with a beginning, middle and end
films have bigger budgets
Films have credits at the end

Key term - celebrity - "The attribution of glamorous or notorious status to somebody in the public sphere" (Rojec, cited in Abercrombie & Longhurst, 2007:54)
Lady Gaga has created herself as a celebrity as she wears the most controversial outfits such as her meat dress.
In this music video the costumes are based on a neon apocalypse theme with space genre items.
the lyrics of the sog go well with the concept as she is singing about being free and not wanting to not be herself which is shwon when she dresses in a different way to hegemonic ideas.
The narrative of this video is based around the celebrity herself as she is the one singing and the audience are being positioned as being part of this this fight as they are watching closely as the characters fight.
There is a varied use of shots but the most common in this video is a id shot and a close up. Close ups are used in this video as the character wants to be focused on in accordance to the lyrics of the song , by using a close up the video allows the audience to feel immersed with the characters as they fight with the music over the top. Mid shots are used to emphasize the wardrobe which is very key to the story line of the video. Mid shots allow the audience to see the whole body of the characters and this makes the audience feel as they too can be free and wear what they want.
The music video was shot on an iphone and this makes editing quite hard but still do able, the song lyrics have been beat matched as best they can but the video itself has a low prodution value as it looks like they have just shot it on a phone which they did...
Montage is used in this music video as the different scenes have been edited together to create a shorted story in 3 mins. The video is fast pace as there are a series or shots that make different characters be in different settings.
The concept for the music video suits the lyrics as the lyrics are all about the celebrity being herself and that she doesn't want love to change her and this is shown through out the video as she is quite a flamboyant person who would wear what she wants when she wants and this music video plays around with adventurous clothing.
the music video has intertextual links with films that are sci-fi as the backgrounds are space themed.

Riptide analysis with some of Q/U blocks ideas
- postmodern video
- lyrical content and on screen visuals
- No real narrative
- Montage clips
- L/S high angle establishing shot of the sea, connoting danger and death
- Mixture of continuous and discontinuous editing
- Scenes that hint at horror as there are scenes of people being dragged into the dark
- Middle aged women lip syncing to the lyrics. Lip syncing gradually gets worse and gets less professional. Mis en scene of blood and smeared makeup could connote abuse, violence.
- Colours and lighting in many of the scenes are dark suggesting mystery.
- Emotional response - cold, confusing
- Positions the audience in a voyeuristic, even perverted perspective, forcing the audience to consider Van Zoonen's notion of a predatory male gaze
- Mid shot of the seance and the mis en scene of the ouija board is referential of horror cinema, in particular 70's horror film
