Video games 3: Assassin's Creed and the role of trailers in marketing

Why does Ubisoft employ this marketing strategy? How can it appeal to mass audiences?

In the video game industry, trailers have a promotional purpose to make sure the target audience can get a glimpse of an upcoming video game, while teasing about the game's key promises and unique selling point with visual or narrative/story highlights.

Game trailers like for Assassins Creed Valhalla are used at expos like E3 to generate media attention and begin presales for the game. Merchandise and presales are really important when releasing a new game as the trailer shows the game play and story but the presales shows what kind of profit the game publishers and developers can expect after the release. Trailers can get all kinds of mixed reviews as they can be misleading in terms of graphics and gameplay because trailers can be simulated to show the key points of the game meaning they could be not as true to the game as intended.

Trailers can appeal to a mass audience as it is an easy media format to highlight gameplay so more people can understand the trailer and want to buy the game. Trailers are really easy to watch in terms of availability as they can be released at expo's then on the internet, with sites like youtube game trailers are easy circulated so they can be seen by a really large audience. The target audience is different for different games but the more that see the trailer then the more likely audiences are likely to see it and buy the game. Youtube is a really great platform for trailers as they can be easy accessed by anyone around the world as well as any device with internet access can have youtube as an app.

Mass audiences can use trailers to formulate opinions on the upcoming game so by using trailers ubisoft can reach a mass audience around the world as well as being able to target any country or particular audience. Trailers can have tags on youtube and online meaning that they can be linked to other sites and videos, this allows users to engage more with the game by seeing what other people think about the game or other things the game a can link to.
