Les revenants exam question
What are the genre conventions do les revenants, how do they
work and how have they developed?
Genre is seen in les revenants through the use of mis en
scene and repeated conventions of the horror and thriller genre with a sub-genre
of a zombie series with the translation of the title being “the returned”. The
mis en scene such as the dark bridge in which we can see Camille walking down
in a high shadowed midshot, this is a convention that is used in the horror
genre because it highlights the darkness of a scene and the isolation of the
main character. The sound in this scene is very subtle because it is mainly of Camille’s
breathing and this creates a sense of her being alive and healthy even if the
audience moments earlier had seen her crash to her death. The Use of the
breathing sounds emphases the ideology of the producer as he wants the audience
to question their grief and the way they feel about death, Camille is shown to
be a nice young girl who is innocent and she was killed so the audience is made
to feel close to her throughout the close ups on the bus at the beginning of
the episode. The unconventional start to the episode leads the audience to
question everyone they meet in the series because they never know where the story’s
going like at the beginning with the sharp sudden death of the school bus children.
There are Drama genre conventions that can be suggested through the series and especially in the first episode with the use of a dual kind of narrative at the end of the episode where we see the twins feeling the emotions of one another, this can be seen as a drama convention because it is offering the other side of the story and what happened in truth that day which is drama filled because f the outcome of the bus crash. The dual narrative offers the audience a new revelation that lena and camille are identical twins and another reason their meeting when camille returns from the dead is so hard to watch, the emotion of the scene is emphasised through the close up of lena crying and this connotes how she is sad that camille died but also guilty because of the truth the audience sees at the end of the episode in that lena was meant to be on that bus with her.
Another way in which les revenants appeals to the drama genre is through the use of
Genre is developed through the first episode with the different character introductions and the converging storylines because this offers the audience a polysemic way to see the genre with drama being used when we see Camille alive and well and further on when we see lena take Simon home for the first time. The series then applies mystery and horror conventions with the close ups of lucy’s stabbing and assault.
