EDITING:
Opening shot of the scene expanding as a circle gives the impression of the beginning of a story with a childish tone because it gives conventions of a fairy tale opening. However, this contrasts to the reality of the music video where it puts a light tone over the fear of mental illnesses with erratic but amusing dancing and overall enthusiasm from the artist about everything he is experiencing. The rapid change from close up to angled mid shot positions the audience in two ways, the direct address from the close up gives an overwhelming feeling for the audience, where as the angled mid shot positions the audience more as spectators and not involved. They are a binary opposition of each other because they position the audience in different roles in the scene which over all displays to the audience different view points of metal illness, feeling intimidated or scared by it and also passively watching it.
Wide mid shot of three guys dancing in car indicates young naivety which is amplified with the use of a funeral car which heavily signifies death and the fact that they appear so happy, positions the audience in an uncomfortable situation feeling afraid for the boys but also cautions because they seem so comfortable and joyous while being physically surrounded by death, represented as the car.
CAMERA WORK:
SOUND:
There is very little object sound, so in the opening scene where the artist is waking up and taking his pills this makes no sound to interrupt the lyrics as they are being spoken into the camera. This can create meaning for the audience because the main character is seen as being chaotic so the lack of sounds suggests how he is out of the real world and is giving a monologue to the audience.
In the next scene Dom is seen to be screaming into the kitchen as a vacant woman stands in the corner this creates meaning for the audience as his screams are silent and this can reflect the ideology that the more society screams about its problems the more likely mental health is side-lined, and that we just put teenagers on medication to stop them feeling things.
The lyrics of the song match up with the movements of the artist as they all mouth to the camera and this is reflected in the pairing drum beat to symbolise a pounding of noise.
MIS EN SCENE:
· Dark cold room, low light reflecting the state of the main characters mental health because of the shadows and lack of light. The contrast of the world of the pill and the world before the pill are widely different because the low light dark world has pale characters and funeral references like the hearse.
· Sparse colour in the beginning and gradually as the sound gets faster, the
· Props reflect a normal everyday bedroom, with clothes on the floor and a messy bed spread this creates meaning for the audience through identification as the audience can look at the bedroom and relate with because every teenager has had a messy bedroom at some point.
· The pill is the only colour in the room then the scene changes and the room are all glitched reflecting how it’s like a light in his life that has been given more meaning and light
· The colour is exaggerated in the kitchen and reflects an idyllic 60’s kitchen reflecting how society is made up of all these nuclear families and there is a toxicity in not belonging
· The bedroom has turned into a brightly lit open room with
