Q1)
Both the times and the daily mirror use images of women on the front pages and this is because the images reinforce a hegemonic view of our patriarchal society as theorised by liesbet van zoonen, however the front page of the daily mirror has two images that support this theory and the times cover only has one image to show this. The times front cover image of theresa may is very unflattering and this is because the newspaper is right wing but can be seen as being a polysemic newspaper meaning that they can have different views on politics in different releases of the paper which means that one story they could be siding with the prime minister and the next story they could go against what she is saying. The image is large and is the only space on the cover that does not contain any copy which suggests that theresa is surrounded by judgements and criticisms of her leadership as prime minister at that time. The times show their ideologies of the producer in the same way meaning that the newspaper takes a right wing approach and shows this through the cover of the newspaper as it has images of theresa may being incompetent .The producers of the daily mirror can show their ideologies by the way the newspaper reports about politics and this is clearly seen with the front page full of adverts and gossip about eastenders with the unflattering image of the prime minister. By having adverts and gossip stories the daily mirror suggest how they don't care about politics as much as the time and this is because they are trying harder to appeal to their audience of working class readers by having adverts about betting and articles about what is on television.
The daily mirror uses colour codes to reinforce ideologies as they use a red white and black colour scheme and this has connotations of war and patriotism. This would reach their audience of working class readers as red is a bold color that is eye-catching as well as having connotations of patriotism. The red would also be significant as it is seen to be a colour that relates to passion and this is seen through the use of the positioning of the gossip article as the eastenders storylines are a conversation starter and a way to make a connection with someone and the storylines of eastenders can be full of passion meaning people will see that the ideologies of the paper are supporting those of the working class background. The lack of copy on the front cover is a difference to the times newspaper as the times has a cover that has lots of copy on the front and this reinforces the ideologies of the producer as the more copy that is on the front the more information the audience will be able to read and this shows that the producers of the daily mirror believe that the audience wouldn't want to read that much about politics. the double page spread of the daily mirror does contain lots of copy, however the image in the middle is very large and shows theresa may with her hands in the air and this prioretic codes suggests that the producers think that may will fail and her surrender is best to come now rather than her embarrass herself. the title of the article contains the pun "mayhem" and this connotes how the producer wants to show that she is causing a mayhem and by having her in charge of the country that we should all surrender now and give up. This article takes a serious government concern and turns it into a joke and this reinforces the producers right wing views.
Both of the papers use puns in their headlines as the times headline is 'driven to despair, this is written in san serif font and that is significant as this make the paper easier to read for the audience, it's also a very common font which implies that the views held within the newspaper are common too. the image of the prime minister is small in comparison to the headline which is seen as belittling to theresa may and this reinforces the producers right wing views.
Q2)
a) A conglomerate is a business or company that owns a very large share of an industry so for example disney is a large film conglomerate as they have a huge share of what films are seen in cinemas and on our screens at home. conglomerates of the newspaper industry include News UK as they own the most newspapers in england meaning that they have the majority of power in what newspapers report on and how the papers are politically inclined. this means that they can make the audience read about what the producers want people to read about.
b) Two potential problems with this are that in the industries which conglomerate are, the diversity of media can be very little as the large conglomerates aren't going to use ideologies of other companies but they will push their own ideologies and eventually we will get media products that al look the same and have the same ideals. The theorist who also believed this is called Bell hooks and she said that the problem with having large companies controlling what we see as an audience is that we will have a less diverse range of media products. By having less products the second problem is that we will have those conglomerates repeat their ideologies which will lead to more people agreeing with the ideas and beliefs because of the repetition of those ideologies society will then also believe them.
c) The regulation of newspapers in the UK is not very effective as the newspaper industry is struggling against the new online distribution platforms and those platforms have different regulations to follow. Thi means that by having different regulations that the way the papers report on news and stories is different online as to how they would write it on an actual paper, for example the daily mirror posted an online article about how women take picture of their messy bedrooms whilst actually showing pictures of women who are wearing not very much clothing whilst having messy bedrooms too. This breaks a paper regulation law but is fine online so the news company can now get away with different stories that show indecent images of children. these images were from all kinds of angles but always showed women wearing not enough clothing as they would have to in the papers. IPSO is the regulation body of the UK and they are the ones who came up with the regulation laws and they make sure that papers follow these laws.
