 Blinding lights by the weekend

The opening shot is a shot of Abel tesafaye (the weekend) with blood around his mouth laughing and this is a key and powerful opening shot because it immediately grasps the attention of the audience because they dont know how he got all messed up. The lighting in the scene has tones of red, blue and white as if he is tripping or something because they look unrealistic for just lighting o the streets. The manic smile on this face hints at a villain mania.

The weekend normally has a pop kind of brand and he is eccentric and this is seen through his glasses and his gloves because they are very 70’s and 80’s music artist psychosis.

The second screenshot i have there is the second shot after the longer introduction where there are a literal interpretation of the lyrics because they are blinding lights, the costume of the sunglasses shows how bright it is.

The costume through out the whole video is the same, red suit with the sunglasses coming on and off through the the video. This can represent how maybe he is symbolising the rich and famous because not everyone can afford that kind of suit and so with the nice cars and vegas lights it could show how the main character is rich and flaunting it. The black leather gloves are ominous because they tend to be used in the horror films and the old artists such as Micheal  Jackson.

The colour in the video are very bold and bright like the suit being a deep red and the constant showing of the warm yellow vegas lights this could be symbolising how he is maybe on drugs because any normal eyes would say those colours are bright but with the after effects of the red/blue blur it could be suggesting that he is tripping. The use of red can connote violence and blood but could be a metaphor for lust and the mania of loving someone. The pain can be seen through the blood but also through the passion of the colour.

The mis en scene of vegas as a party city connotes the luxury in the video because of the fast car and the empty dining halls just laying there waiting for a rich guy to party in. The dining hall looked as if it were set up for a party with all the dining set up but then was ambushed by the video as a rich person form of recklessness. Blinding lights is included in almost every shot.

This video uses intertextuality as it references the joker because of the red suit costume and the villain characteristics come through too with the use of the manic smile.

These references and uses of intersexuality make the audience feel nostalgic and can appeal to those wider audiences or fans of other artists.

The editing is cut so we don’t see the real danger and the narrative isn’t complete.

Postmodernism is meant to be different and make you question and this music video gives the audience loads of questions and things to think about in terms of like money and fame and how far people can go with this hyper real lifestyle.

This music video can be seen as a-typical through the use of editing because the dangers in the video are cut out and only shown as after effects, this is unconventional because its more like a trailer for a film with the pull of danger for the audience but with no context. This is also an unconventional music video because of the way the camera is used by the main character as if he is high and this is used in films rather than music videos.
